A Night to Remember at The Ritz: A Tale of Faultless Hospitality

By Andrew Wolmark

I have built my career on guest experience and there’s one golden rule I hold dear: exceptional service is the key that unlocks an unforgettable experience. Of course, a stunning room and exquisite cuisine are important, but without the warmth, attention, and personalised touch of a truly great team, it’s all just a fleeting moment. And for me, that is the very essence of The Ritz Hotel in London.

For my milestone birthday celebration, I wanted an experience that would mirror my high standards for guest service, and where better to indulge than The Ritz? This iconic hotel had already woven its magic into two prior occasions—one, a birthday lunch with a dear friend’s mother, and another, an afternoon tea for my mother’s 70th birthday. On each visit, I was entranced by the impeccable service, which seemed almost intuitive. It wasn’t just that the staff were efficient, it was that they understood how to truly make the experience. Their ability to cater to each guest’s unique needs and preferences felt effortless, like a symphony where every note was perfectly played.

This time, I decided to extend the occasion—a dinner at The Ritz and an overnight stay to mark my "big birthday" (after all, you’re only fifty once!). From the moment we crossed the threshold, we were embraced in the kind of hospitality that made you feel as though you were coming home. The hotel is currently undergoing an impressive refurbishment, and though the rooms certainly could benefit from a fresh touch, it didn’t matter. Every detail, every interaction, and every moment radiated the magic that only The Ritz can conjure.

The doormen, with their charismatic presence, set the tone with their warm welcomes and playful charm. Reception was an experience in itself, blending professionalism with a delightful twist of theatre—announcing our upgrade like the grand reveal of a secret, with a flourish and a smile. But it was in the Rivoli Bar where we found ourselves truly immersed in the Ritz experience. The team there was not only passionate about their craft but took time to sit with us, share the story behind their new menu, and engage with our questions, effortlessly tailoring the conversation to our interests.

And then, the dinner—Michelin-starred, set in what could easily be the most stunning dining room in Europe. The service was a dance of grace and precision, almost balletic in its execution, yet brimming with humour and a personal touch. A particularly memorable moment? The crêpe Suzette in stereo, theatrically prepared at the table in perfect synchrony. But honestly, there were countless highlights throughout the evening—each one more delightful than the last.

I left that night with a feeling of deep satisfaction, knowing I’d experienced something truly special. And for me, that’s the ultimate praise. Service, hospitality, and experience—not just a meal or a night’s stay, but an unforgettable journey into the heart of luxury.

To say I couldn't fault it is, as anyone who knows me will tell you, truly saying something.
