Luxury Isn’t One Size Fits All
At Parade, we often explore the elements that transform a stay into a truly luxurious experience. Recently, we visited three countryside retreats near London - Soho Farmhouse, Cowley Manor Experimental, and Heckfield Place - to delve into what makes up that intangible "special magic" of luxury.
Soho Farmhouse: Unpolished Charm
Soho Farmhouse, nestled in Oxfordshire, has created its own version of luxury. While it may lack the elegant service expected at its price point (occasional lapses in restaurant service have been noted), this doesn’t affect the appeal. The rustic-chic cabins, expansive grounds, and a plethora of activities available - from horse riding and boating on the lake to design consultations with Soho Home interior designers - create an atmosphere that feels both relaxed and exclusive. Despite its imperfections, we find ourselves returning time after time, drawn by an elusive charm that transcends conventional luxury metrics.
Cowley Manor Experimental: Stylish Yet Incomplete
Cowley Manor Experimental in the Cotswolds has a bold design aesthetic, blending historical grandeur with contemporary flair. The interiors, crafted by Parisian designer Dorothée Meilichzon, are hugely fun and “inspired by the rumour that Lewis Carrol based Alice in Wonderland there…with design riffs on rabbits’ heads, playing cards, chess boards and a discombobulating sense of scale” (CN Traveller). The staff are attentive, and the ambiance is cozy, yet it seems to strive for luxury, rather than be luxury. While the setting and service are commendable, for us, the overall experience lacks the seamless elegance that defines true luxury.
Heckfield Place: The Epitome of Refined Luxury
Heckfield Place in Hampshire is a true example of understated luxury. Set within 400 acres of serene countryside, it offers impeccable service, exquisite design, and a commitment to sustainability. The attention to detail - from biodynamic farm-to-table dining to thoughtfully curated interiors - creates an environment where luxury feels natural and unforced. However, its quirky charm may feel a little contrived for some (but not, we must stress, for us!).
Our Reflections
These experiences underscore that luxury is not solely defined by opulence or flawless service. It's about creating a connection, an atmosphere that resonates on a personal level. Whether it's the unpretentious charm of Soho Farmhouse, the stylish ambition of Cowley Manor Experimental, or the refined elegance of Heckfield Place, each offers a distinct interpretation of luxury.
At Parade, we understand that true luxury lies in the details that make an experience feel uniquely personal and memorable. It's about crafting moments that a guest remembers, long after the stay has ended.
